If you have ever partied in Old Town Scottsdale, you know the variety it has to offer and the crazy shenanigans that take place once the sun goes down. One of the craziest days Scottsdale has to offer is El Hefe’s infamous Sunday day party. What takes place during a Sunday you might ask? Basically no words can describe it, this day is simply a “you have to be there” sort of deal. The fuel behind one of the most successful Sunday Funday parties in this town is the enthusiast DJ Thomas James. Tommy is a vet when it comes to deejaying in the nightlife industry, including winning the AZNIA #1 Electronic Dance Music DJ in Arizona in 2012. He has turned an average Sunday into the biggest day party in Arizona. I decided to ask him some questions and naturally, he gave me some answers. This was not a “what are you life goals” kind of interview. Here is what he had to say:
Me: What is the craziest thing you have done for love or money?
Tommy: I almost quit deejaying for my ex girlfriend of three years. She didn’t like that “lifestyle” and didn’t see me going anywhere. But when push came to shove, I chose my passion over her. At the time it seemed crazy but now she is sitting in a cubical somewhere, and I couldn’t be happier about my choice!
Me: What is the first thing you notice in the opposite sex?
Tommy: Eyes, you can learn a lot about a girl in the first 10 seconds just from just her eyes.
Me: Would you rather have the power to be invisible or to read minds?
Tommy: The power to read minds would be intense; you would definitely hear some things you didn’t want to hear. However, it would allow you to live in a world of truth. To be honest, I just want the power to fly, how much fun would that be!
Me: If your life was a song, what would the title be?
Tommy: Electro Fetish: Loud, fun, and very wrong in the best way possible.
Me: Your most rewarding experience?
Tommy: The last two years building 4 2 10 Sundays at El Hefe. The first Sunday I played it was as dead as a Monday lunch, but Ryan Hibbert gave me a shot. I stuck to the electro format, built a network, and the word of mouth spread. Now we have the #1 day party in the state! It’s so rewarding to put so much work into something and have it achieve this level of success. Not to mention how much I look forward to Sunday every week, it really is my favorite thing to do!
